Connections Between Sleep Deprivation and Depression is my in-depth exploration of the complex relationship between sleep and mental well-being. As a student researcher, I investigated how chronic sleep deprivation affects cognitive function and emotional health, focusing on the interplay between insomnia, depression, and cognitive performance. This literature review highlights the reciprocal influences between sleep patterns and mood disorders, offering insights into underlying mechanisms and potential interventions. To develop this review, I refined my research question, identified key studies, and structured the content to provide a comprehensive understanding of the links between sleep and mental health. I thoroughly analyzed existing literature, synthesized findings from diverse studies, and crafted clear summaries that connected empirical evidence with broader themes. Throughout this process, I honed my skills in reviewing scientific research, analyzing study designs, and exploring how sleep deprivation impacts critical cognitive processes. Beyond written analysis, I incorporated visual representations to illustrate sleep deprivation's effects on brain function, particularly the role of the hippocampus and microglial activity. This approach helped convey complex information more accessibly and engagingly. Feedback from peers and mentors was crucial in refining the content, ensuring clarity, coherence, and a strong narrative flow. This literature review not only deepens our understanding of how sleep deprivation and depression interact but also underscores the importance of effective sleep management strategies for improving mental health and cognitive well-being. Through this project, I aim to illuminate potential avenues for intervention, hoping to enhance the quality of life for those affected by sleep-related challenges.
